Dear Friends of the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center,
New Year Greetings from Jerusalem! We are united in our prayers and intentions for peace. At the start of each New Year, I remember my father's words: “The new year will be what you make it, and remember change begins in your heart and leads to virtuous living. The less you try to change others and focus on empowering them, the greater positive impact you will have.” Over time, that wise counsel often fades as the focus shifts to tackling daily challenges. The focus shifts from daily improvement and virtue to overcoming the problems others seem to create. Sound familiar?
I share this experience because I think we all have that tendency to some degree. I recently discussed with a colleague how easy it is to prioritize what we are doing above the needs of those we live, work, and interact with. One of my resolutions this New Year is to remind myself that meaning and satisfaction in life come not only from productive, hard work but especially from creating healthy and life-giving relationships.I know that this mindset starts with gratitude. Expressing appreciation for the gifts we are given helps us stay humble and grounded. Recognizing the fruitfulness of the gifts we are called to share fosters virtue. My prayer for each of you is that you find time to reflect on the role of gratitude in your life and imagine ways of sharing that spirit with everyone you encounter.
With a heart full of gratitude to God for both the gifts and challenges of this past year, I thank each of you for your prayers and support for our mission at the Notre Dame Center. As I’ve shared before, our dedicated staff daily remind me that “Thanks God for everything” is our underlying motto.
Christmas Day Mass in Bethlehem. What an amazing privilege and grace!
Despite the uncertainty brought by conflict and war, our Center was blessed with numerous local visitors who came to experience the spirit of Christmas, hospitality, service, and self-giving love that define the Notre Dame experience. It was a challenging time for many of our staff, as some were unable to cross the checkpoints. Yet their commitment shone through, with even those unable to work joining us for our annual Christmas party and celebration. I could not be more proud of those who remain faithful to the mission of Notre Dame, even during temporary layoffs. I am equally inspired by those who gave extra effort to keep our doors open and our spirit true.
Thankful to our amazing staff here at Notre Dame - photo taken after the annual Christmas party
We continue to pray for peace here in the Holy Land and throughout the world. Have a blessed and holy New Year.
Sincerely in the Lord,
Fr. David Steffy, LC
